Pittsburgh Penguins vs Philadelphia Flyers

October 7, 2010

Opening night at CONSOL Energy Center saw the Pens facing their biggest rival. See some of the photos and atmosphere from that historic game after the jump.

The Flyers came to town. We didn't have Pronger to worry about, but the other three gave us enough trouble to make up for his absence.

A big crowd waited and watched as the Pens arrived and walked the red carpet into the arena.

This cool building sits across 5th Ave from CONSOL.

These banners were on the light poles around the outside of the arena.

We tracked down a couple of Penguins "celebs" to pose with the Knitting Lady's sock.

I seem to have upset Mr. Adams.

New Zamboni. Looking good.

Apparently, Iceburgh has been demoted to puck collecting duties.

Player intros. No really good shots, but I'll post a video of Crosby's intro when I get some time.

More work for Lemieux. We have the coolest owner in the league by far.

Anthem. If the audio in the arena didn't suck, this would have totally pumped up the crowd.

There has to be a better and quicker way to change the ads on the boards.

I thought I might have to start a new countdown to the first Pens goal, but finally they got on the board.

Enter The Tang.

He goofed. He knew it. Hopefully it was just a product of illness and not enough playing time with Martin.

This dude took a late penalty. He couldn't bear to watch the ensuing power play.

Pens couldn't get it done with the extra (two) men.

Much like the Pens, I am struggling a bit to get into regular season form. When the big plays happened, I wasn't ready for the finishing shot. I can make excuses...new arena, opening night nerves, all but one goal was scored at the other end of the ice. Excuses don't win hockey games, and they don't make up for missing a lot of big opportunities. I'll try to do better.

Go Pens!
