Pens vs Blue Jackets, December 13, 2014

If you were coming up with a soundtrack for the Pens latest visit to Columbus, you might have led things off with Ray Stevens' "The Streak".  After all, the Jackets entered the game having won their last five, which is pretty impressive considering they dropped six straight before that.  For their part, the Pens had won the last six regular season games at Nationwide Arena.

Once the puck dropped, the tune quickly changed to "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" as the teams combined for a respectable 46 penalty minutes in the first period alone.

There is definitely a nice rivalry brewing here in the wake of last year's six game playoff series, which ended with the Jackets on the losing side of the handshake line in front of their home crowd.  Clearly this wasn't the game 7 that some fans in the building were hoping for, but credit must be given as for the first time in recent memory the chants of "CBJ" managed to drown out "Let's Go Pens".

Alright, enough talk, let's get to our pics from the game.

Warm-up:

Not surprising we would see some new faces with the recent spate of injury and illness.

Bobby Farnham and Bryan Rust would be the latest Pens to make their NHL debut.

With another Ive Leaguer on the team in Farnham, Craig Adams would like everyone to know he is still the smartest Penguin.

Anthem:

Despite the recent winning streak, some Jackets fans prefer to remain anonymous.

Others are more than willing to let their freak flag fly!

First Period:

Nick Foligno got Columbus on the board early.

Bortuzzo, not afraid to throw his body around to make a play.

Agnew approves.

Foligno may have opened the scoring, but Downie and Prout got the real fun started.  Each earned double roughing minors and 10 minute misconducts.

That was only the undercard.
For the main event, it was...

Farnham
Vs
Leopold

Who, me?
Yeah, you.

Of course Downie couldn't get off the ice without getting in a few more scuffles.

Intermission:

Second Period:

Bryan Rust wanted in on the action, going after Corey Tropp for his hit on Farnham.

Then Steve Downie realized he hadn't had a penalty all period.

"I'm your huckleberry"

Ding Ding.

"Finish him!"

Finally the Pens were on the board as Comeau picked up his first road goal of the season to make it 1-1.

Former Pen Brian Gibbons made an appearance.

Intermission:

Third Period:

After focusing more on fighting than scoring in the first two periods, the teams would explode for four in the third.  Letang started things off with a shorty to make it 2-1 Pens.

Boone Jenner evened the score at 2-2, cashing in on the penalty shot after Despres dragged him down on the breakaway.

Jack Johnson put the Jackets back on top late in the third.

Johnston gathered the troops for a last gasp effort.

"Feed Tanger, he's our hot man."

With the goalie pulled and only 11 seconds left on the clock, he scored!

We were headed to OT.

And then to a shootout.

Letang found the back of the net again in the shootout, but it wasn't enough to overcome goals by Atkinson and Johanssen.

Foligno felt so confident with the 2-1 lead that he wasted his attempt on this spin-o-rama.

Jackets win.

Stars of the Game:

Letang and a couple of guys from Columbus.

"Boom"
